Consumer Directed Services (CDS)

Putting You in Control of Your Care

What Is CDS?

Consumer Directed Services (CDS) is an empowering option that allows individuals and their families to take an active role in deciding who provides their care, how it is delivered, and when it is scheduled. Rather than having an agency assign staff, CDS enables you to select, hire, train, and manage the people you trust most. This is most often family members, friends, or community members.

Such a personalized approach ensures care is provided in a way that aligns with your preferences, lifestyle, and needs. While CDS involves more responsibility, our team is there every step of the way to provide the tools, guidance, and support you need.

How It Works

In the CDS model, the individual or their legally authorized representative becomes the employer of record for certain services. This role includes recruiting and training caregivers, setting work schedules, and making adjustments as needs change. You are supported by our financial management team, who handle payroll, tax requirements, and record-keeping so that you can focus on quality care rather than administrative tasks. We also provide ongoing consultation to help you stay organized and confident in managing your services.

Services You Can Direct

Through CDS, you can choose to self-direct a variety of essential supports. These may include employment assistance to prepare for and secure meaningful work, supported employment to maintain success in the workplace, and transportation for job sites, appointments, or community activities. Respite and in-home respite care are also available, giving primary caregivers a break while ensuring continuity of care. Additionally, nursing services can be provided by licensed vocational nurses or registered nurses, and financial management services are offered to keep your employer role running smoothly. Each of these services can be tailored to meet your specific needs.

Benefits of Choosing CDS

Families often choose CDS because it offers more control over care decisions, greater flexibility in scheduling, and the ability to work with caregivers they know and trust. It provides the opportunity to create a consistent and supportive care environment while still having the backing of a professional team to assist with the administrative side of the program.
